Pasting a glyph into Cricut Design Space

Design Space can’t upload a font file. It shows the fonts installed on your computer, iPad or phone as “system fonts”, so the font has to be installed on the device you design on before any glyph from it will display.

Open the same font file here and tap the glyph you want. Swashes and tails are usually in the PUA alternates group. It’s now on your clipboard.
In Design Space, add a text box, pick the font from the system fonts and type your word.
Put the cursor where the glyph belongs and paste. Inside the text box the glyph can look like an empty square; check the letters on the canvas.

Not an official Cricut method Cricut hasn’t published instructions for this. The steps follow a how-to guide by Creative Fabrica (a font marketplace, not Cricut), which also says it only works when the font’s extras are PUA-encoded.

If the glyph has no Unicode code, or pasting doesn’t work, use Download SVG in the glyph panel and add the file with Upload → Upload Image. SVG also works in the iPhone, iPad and Android apps, which can’t open DXF files. The shape comes in at 1 inch per font size, so resize it on the canvas to match your text.

On iPad: why a web page instead of a character map

On a computer the operating system has a glyph browser: Font Book’s Repertoire view on a Mac, and Character Map on Windows, which can list a font’s Private Use Characters. Apple’s iPad guide only covers installing fonts through App Store apps and describes no such viewer, and even Procreate’s handbook points iPad users to a third-party character-viewer app. We found no glyph picker in Cricut’s Design Space help either.

This viewer runs in Safari, so it covers that gap:

Save the font to the Files app. A downloaded .zip can be opened here directly; if that fails, tap the .zip in Files to unzip it.
Open this page in Safari, tap Choose a font file and pick the .ttf or .otf.
Tap a glyph to copy it, switch to Design Space or Canva, and paste.

The font itself still has to be installed on the iPad (through a font app from the App Store) for Design Space to show it as a system font.

Pasting a glyph into Canva

Canva shows a pasted glyph only in a font it has, which for your own fonts means uploading the font to a Brand Kit. That’s a paid-plan feature: Canva Pro, Teams, Business, Education and Nonprofits. In a team, only owners, administrators and brand designers can upload.

Upload OTF, TTF or WOFF. Canva doesn’t support variable fonts, so upload the separate static weights.
ZIP and WOFF2 files are rejected; unzip or convert first.
Upload works from the mobile app too, not just a computer.

Then add a text box, set it to your uploaded font and paste the glyph. Canva’s help pages don’t mention PUA characters, so try one glyph before you build a whole design around it.

No font upload on your plan, or a glyph without Unicode? Upload the glyph’s SVG as an image instead. Canva asks for SVGs under 3 MB, saved as SVG 1.1, with text and strokes turned into outlines. The file from this tool is a single filled path with no text or strokes.

Why some glyphs can’t be copied

Copying works through character codes. A PUA glyph has one (U+E000 to U+F8FF), so it survives copy and paste. Many fonts store their alternates with no code at all: Great Vibes, one of the fonts on this site, has 2,025 glyphs, and only 2 of them sit in the PUA. (We counted that from the font file.) Design programs reach those through OpenType features such as Stylistic Alternates, Swash or ligatures. For each one, the panel above names the feature that produces it and, when it can, the letter it replaces.

If the app you cut or print from only takes pasted text, you have three options:

Download the glyph as an SVG here and bring it in as an image.
Check the font download for a PUA-encoded file or a note about PUA from the font maker.
In Silhouette Studio Designer Edition or higher, try the Glyphs tab, though Silhouette says it doesn’t show every glyph set.

Glyph files and your font license

Putting a swash into a name design is ordinary font use. Turning single letters into separate files to sell is often not allowed. Creative Fabrica’s Subscription License, for example, allows selling word or quote designs made with a font but not individual letters or numbers as separate files, such as SVG alphabets. Adobe Fonts rules out products made from single glyphs.
