Printing and putting it together
- Print at 100% / “Actual size”. “Fit to page” shrinks the flags a little and can clip the cut line. Card stock or heavier paper hangs flatter than copy paper.
- Cut along the solid outline. The gray line under each flag (“Flag 3 of 14: P”) tells you its place in the row.
- Fold-over tab: fold the top strip back along the dashed line, lay the string in the fold, then glue or tape it closed. Punch holes: punch the two circles with a standard 1/4-inch hole punch and thread the string in through one hole and out through the other, so it runs behind the flag.
- Slide the flags along the string about an inch apart, check the order, and tape the backs if they slip.
Short on time? Print one sheet first and hold it up where the banner will hang: the size of a 1-per-sheet flag (7.5 × 9.8 in on Letter) is easy to misjudge on screen.
How many flags, sheets and how much string
Each letter or number gets its own flag. A space either leaves a gap on the string (one flag wide) or adds a blank, star, heart or dot flag, which you choose under “Between words”. Two flags per sheet halves the paper: the flags turn out 4.8 in wide instead of 7.5 in on US Letter.

Calculated for US Letter with a gap between words: flag widths, plus 1 in between flags, plus one flag width per word gap. Add a foot or two at each end for tying. The tool shows the same numbers for your own phrase.
Saving ink
A full-color, 1-per-sheet flag covers most of the page with solid color. Ink-saving outline prints only the cut line and the letter outlines in black: print it on colored card stock, or let kids color the letters in before you string them up. The stitched border adds a dashed line just inside the edge, which looks like sewing on fabric bunting.
The fonts, and selling banners you make
Every font in this tool is from the Google Fonts collection, under the SIL Open Font License (OFL) or the Apache License 2.0. The PDF holds the letters as drawn shapes, not the font file.
